The Pi family having owned a restaurant for 25 years in South Korea, pooled their resources to immigrate to the United States so their children could have better opportunities. A mother and her four sons started a restaurant, Pi’s Chinese in Midland, Michigan.
Starting with Pi’s Chinese Restaurant, the family quickly made a name for themselves, becoming arguably the most popular and widely known Asian style restaurant in the tri-cities area.
Henry Pi, noticed the lack of upscale Asian restaurants in the area and with recent popularity and demand of Japanese Steakhouses, he brought the first Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar to Midland in the form of Genji. Genji’s popularity soon led to another expansion: Pi’s Asian Express. This new restaurant caters to the fast and casual lifestyle adopted today, focusing on takeout, fast service, and a lower price point while serving many of the favorites from the Pi’s brand in Midland.
